1st Kuyam of 2007-2008

Its hard to believe that we have just experienced our very first Kuyam of teh 2007-08 school year! Though it was only the 2nd day of school, our brand new music program, led by Aaron Smith, had already prepared the students to sing "Funga Alafia", a Nigerian song of welcome. Students in grades 1 through 5 added their voices to a nearly all school choir, accompanied by the rhythms of the 6th grade community drum circle. Click on the video below to see the performance:

We also had a special presentation by the martial arts team that will be coordinating the new afterschool Capoeira program. "Its like karate in slow motion," explained Paul, a 2nd grade student and resident Capoeira expert. Paul was even brave enough to take the stage and show us his moves with the martial arts team.

Kuyam this week also featured our parent band and our brand new kindergarten class. Though these students (the youngest in the Seven Arrows community), have yet to attend a music class, Kuyam provided them a very special opportunity to learn the "musical alphabet". Just watch as they sing, "A, B, C, D, E, F, G!"

The final song invited everyone to get out of their seats, in a brand new song by Aaron Smith called, "Everyone Loves to Dance!" And boy, do they! Catch a glimpse below...

Well, that's all for Kuyam this week. We hope you will all join next Friday, for more music and community sharing! There's not a better way to end the week in town!
